i have to say, working on these covers for the series is one of my absolute favorite things each month. as much as i love painting by hand with real paints, i do miss fiddling with photoshop.

And i know- the look of these covers aren't exactly what some of the top CG guys out there are doing, but it's definite a change of pace for me once in a while.

this is cover 3 and one of the first really plot driven covers for the series i've done. Not sure if people realize this when looking at covers, but we solicit books at least 3 months in advance, which means-

* sometimes the cover artist has NO idea what the book will be about yet ( luckily, i get all scripts ahead of time for this series)
* newer series starting with #1's have covers that are obviously treated differently than covers for issues at #14 in a series- for promotional reasons.

*for newer series, there is obviously more reveals to be hidden, so that affects how heavily tied into a plot a cover layout has.

* the cover you see solicited wont always be what goes to final print.

* nothing is final until it is printed.

anyway, and with that out the way, here's # 3!

12 x 18 ink on 300lb hotpress + photoshop.

the background buildings are completely photoshop and not in the original drawing. i used a combination of photoshop calligraphy brush tips.
