i took a crash course in photoshop with some coloring buddies, got some notes on production and just dove it. when it came out that summer, everyone was right, it sold like crap and printed really bad since i allso handled a lot of the pre-printing stuff as well (pencils to final colors and covers in 4 weeks moves really fast, plus a book that sold that low has a really tough chance of getting picked up for a second issue by retailers if you are late) . rookie moves all over the place. got the worst reviews ever. like.. more than all my past books combined.
teh upside was that even though everyone in comics hated it, i got attention from companies outside of comics and went from having only dc as a client, to having more toys design, animation, and video game work than i could handle. it was great. plus i also got to do 6 covers that was basically my cover portfolio for DC. right after that, they offered superman batman and let me do anything i wanted.
okay, i got carried away there.sorry long post man.
Personally I have always worked on my own stuff instead of doing companies products. I just think you get more out of it. Yeah, you get paid decent at DC and Marvel but they tend to abuse their artist. They sure believe that you can be replaced pretty quick. I do think Marvel is worse then DC in that department though. I think DC is a little more loyal then Marvel.
I hope the experience doesn't keep you from doing future creator owned stuff. I would love to see something like that from ya again.
This concludes this weeks episode of random word association theatre, tune in next week to see what the words "duck," "Benday," and "glib" make me think of!
